Crewe care home residents create their own Olympic spirit
PENSIONERS at a Crewe care village spent the last fortnight getting into the Olympic spirit.
The residents at Belong Crewe care village took part in dementia-friendly activities, including table tennis, the bean bag toss and an egg and spoon race while they watched GB rack up the medals at Tokyo 2020.
The residents were also competing for podium success with a mix of activities designed by the village's activities team and fitness instructor, specifically with older people and those living with dementia in-mind.
They also created their own Olympic flags and banners of support, while in the village's gym they cycled a virtual route of the world on a linked screen.
Jess Butler, experience coordinator at Belong Crewe, said: "It's been great fun hosting our own Olympics at the village.
"We've been awash with flags and decorations made by residents to support one another. The light exercise, crafts activities and camaraderie has kept everyone active."
Getting into the spirit of the occasion has also proven to have reignited memories, with residents sharing anecdotes of personal sporting success in their youth and their favourite tales of Olympics from years gone by.
Some were even able to recall the London 1948 games and the first international football tournament to be broadcast on British television.
Belong staff supported residents in their own Olympic torch relay to kick-off the event, before later hosting the closing ceremony, featuring the awarding of medals, speeches and a village party.
