Dr Kieran Mullan, MP for Crewe and Nantwich, is supporting a campaign to reform the laws surrounding the desecration of a body.
This week Dr Mullan had a virtual meeting with Marie McCourt, who is campaigning for a review of the common laws relating to the desecration of a body.
In the past, Marie McCourt has successfully campaigned for the introduction of Helen's Law on behalf of her late daughter, Helen McCourt.
Helen McCourt was murdered in 1988 however her killer has never revealed her body's location. Under Helen's Law, murderers and paedophiles who hold back information on their victims could now face longer behind bars.
Marie is now campaigning for further reform on the laws surrounding the desecration of a body.
Speaking in the Commons backing her campaign Kieran said: "We need further reform so that the criminal justice system adequately reflects how we would feel if one of our loved ones was desecrated after death."
Dr Mullan secured a meeting with the Justice Minister, Alex Chalk MP, to discuss Marie's campaign.
Dr Mullan commented: "It was a pleasure to meet with Marie McCourt, whose campaigning determination has led to the introduction of Helen's Law and who is equally determined to reform the laws surrounding the desecration of a body.
"When discussing Marie's campaign, I was shocked to learn that criminal law does not currently have a way of recognising the desecration of the body.
"Those who commit murder, desecrate the body and prevent a decent burial need to receive a sentence that fits their terrible crime.
"I look forward to supporting Marie in her campaign and I am very pleased that the Minister has agreed to meet with me and Marie to discuss this important matter."
