Crewe Alexandra manager to deal with player's 'ill-judged' violent conduct incident today
Crewe Alexandra's manager will deal with a player's red card incident for violent conduct today (August 15) - following an off-the ball incident over the weekend.
The Railwaymen lost away to Salford City 3-0 at Moor Lane on Saturday (August 13) - playing with 10-men for two thirds of the match.
After starting brightly, 787 Alex fans saw their side concede to a goal from Conor McAleny in the first-half.
A quick fire brace came from forward, Brandon Thomas-Asante, early in the second-half - ending Crewe's hopes of pulling off a comeback.
What Happened In The Red Card Incident?
Alex forward, Bassala Sambou, was dismissed for his part in an incident with Ammies defender, Theo Vassell, in the 31st minute.
The 24-year-old grabbed the former Stoke City academy player by the throat and was instantly dismissed by referee, Craig Hicks.
Sambou is now expected to face a three-match ban for violent conduct.
The Manager's Reaction:
Shortly after the final whistle, Crewe Alexandra manager, Alex Morris, gave his post-match reaction to the defeat and red card incident.
Morris said: "A player loses his discipline, which has then completely changed the complexion of the game and just made it 10 times more difficult to navigate and negotiate.
"Days like this against opposition who are really good in possession and heat - are difficult enough to navigate through.
"When you go down to 10 men, It makes it very very difficult indeed and the outcome was they cruised to victory."
Bassala Sambou:
Sambou signed for Crewe Alexandra from Dutch Eredivisie side, Fortuna Sittard, in January.
He has since made 20 appearances for the club - scoring twice last season.
Sambou had started all three EFL League Two league games prior to his dismissal.
Morris added: "There was somebody else alongside me who should take some blame for what was to come from the game.
"He lost his discipline and left us in a situation and a predicament we didn't want to be in.
"He has held his hand up but it will be dealt with on Monday morning (August 15), let's leave it there.
"He has had a promising start to the season but made a very ill-judged decision and now someone will get the chance to take his place."
Sambou's Apology:
After the game, Sambou made a statement on social media - apologising to Alex supporters and his teammates for the incident.
The German striker posted an apology on Twitter, saying: "Just wanna apologise to the fans and my teammates for my actions today.
"It was way out of character and I take full responsibility for everything today.
"Still early in the season let's hope to bounce back next week."
Sambou has now been handed a punishment by Crewe Alexandra, which has been accepted.
