Crewe Alexandra have announced the signing of 25-year-old midfield playmaker Charlie Colkett - the club's fourth signing of the summer.

Colkett has signed from Cheltenham Town today (June 14), on a two-year contract.

The 5'9" midfielder from Newham, London, had signed for Cheltenham in January this year - making nine league appearances.

He was released by the club in May after not being offered a further contract.

Charlie Colkett has represented England at under-16 to under-20 level - making 24 caps (Crewe Alex).

The League One club signed Colkett on a short-term deal after a successful spell with Swedish club Ostersunds FK.

He made 64 appearances across three years after signing from Chelsea for a 'small fee.'

Colkett joined Chelsea as a youth player in 2007 and was contracted at the club until 2019.

He was part of the Chelsea youth side which recorded back to back triumphs in both the UEFA Youth League and the FA Youth Cup in 2015 and 2016.

In April 2016, Colkett was named upon the first-team substitute bench.

He never managed to make a professional appearance for the West-London club.

Colkett had loan spells for the likes of Bristol Rovers, Swindon Town, Vitesse and Shrewsbury Town before Chelsea sold the player to Ostersunds FK.

The 25-year old has represented England from under-16 level to under-20 level.

He made of a total of 24 caps, scoring on four occasions.

Tommy Lowery joined Crewe as a nine-year-old. His contract is set to expire this summer (Crewe Alex).

Today (June 14), Crewe Alexandra said on their website: "Everyone at Crewe Alexandra would like to welcome Charlie to the Football Club."

The signing of Colkett will be seen to many as an intended replacement for Tommy Lowery.

Lowery hasn't signed a new contract with The Railwaymen and will leave this summer.

Last season, former manager David Artell left Lowery out of the side for the first 13 games of the league season - down to the contract dispute.

It was hoped that a new contract could be agreed but Crewe's pending relegation across the season meant it was even more difficult to strike a deal.

Connor O'Riordan signed a new three-year deal with Crewe Alexandra on June 9 (Crewe Alex).

Colkett joins defensive midfielder, Conor Thomas, right-back Kelvin Mellor and forward Courtney Baker-Richardson.

All have signed for The Railwaymen before pre-season officially commences.

This positive news also comes after local Crewe Alex youngster Connor O'Riordan signed a new and improved contract - last week.
