Cheshire East Council has provided an update for Crewe residents on the NCWP roadworks in the Leighton area - with one road closure starting from May 9.

Main works will start on the North West Crewe Package (NWCP) scheme next month - lasting for approximately 80 weeks.

The council is encouraging residents to sign up to receive updates about the North West Crewe Package.

The works will see a series of highways and junction improvements made around the Leighton area to ease congestion and improve access to Leighton Hospital.

It will also provide a link to new and existing housing developments. 1250 new homes will be arriving in the area within the coming years.

As part of the works, various closures will be in place along the A530 Middlewich Road from next month until around March 2023.

Crewe Nub News contacted Cheshire East Council for more clarity on the roadworks last week.

Cheshire East Council has today (April 27), confirmed to Nub News that these works will begin on Monday 9 May.

There will be a closure of the A530 Middlewich Road, between its junction with Pyms Lane and Smithy Lane.

Further information of the closure and the diversion route can be found here: North West Crewe Package (cheshireeast.gov.uk).

Access will be maintained for local residents.

The overall NWCP scheme is expected to take around two years to complete and details of further road closures in the area will be announced as the scheme progresses, and regular project newsletters will be issued.

The main NWCP works are being carried out by contractor Balfour Beatty on behalf of Cheshire East Council.

This will include the construction of a new road linking Smithy Lane, Minshull New Road and Middlewich Road (A530), as well as the realignment of Smithy Lane, Flowers Lane and improvements to other road junctions associated with the scheme.

The package also includes the extension of the 'Connect 2' walking and cycling route to Leighton Hospital and North West Crewe.

More pedestrian and cycle routes will be constructed in the Leighton area by the end of the works.

A section of Minshull New Road outside Leighton Academy will be permanently closed to traffic- aiming to create a safer environment for children arriving and leaving the school.

Works will start on the A530 Middlewich Road from May 9 (Ryan Parker).
