Council confirms government utilising Crewe hotels as temporary housing for asylum seekers

Cheshire East Council has confirmed the UK government is utilising two Crewe hotels - for the temporary accommodation of asylum seekers.

Local political party, Putting Crewe First, made a Freedom of Information request to the council about asylum seekers in Crewe.

Cheshire East has confirmed Serco (on behalf of Government) are utilising two Crewe hotels - providing temporary housing for asylum seekers.

These are: Best Western Crewe Arms Hotel, Nantwich Road and Hotel Ibis Styles Crewe, Emperor Way.

Hotel Ibis Styles Crewe, Emperor Way, is being used as temprary housing for ayslum seekers (Crewe Nub News).

The council has also confirmed a number of dispersed properties within Crewe are being used for temporary accommodation.

Putting Crewe First asked Cheshire East if the use of the Crewe hotels as an asylum seeker/refugee hostel is an unauthorised use of such properties.

The council said: "We are exploring if there should be a change of use for hotels longer term with other local authorities and the Home Office."

Best Western Crewe Arms Hotel, Nantwich Road is being used as temporary accomodation for asylum seekers (Crewe Nub News).

Cheshire East replied: "The Home Office governs the Asylum Seekers Programme and commission Serco to procure accommodation.

"There is not a maximum number, although councils are able to start to challenge, if numbers exceed a 1:200 population ratio for the Local Authority area."

Cheshire East Council told Putting Crewe First it receives a tariff for individuals coming from Ukraine and Afghanistan under the ARAP and Homes for Ukraine Scheme.

Under both schemes the tariff is £10,500 per person.

Putting Crewe First made a Freedom of Information request to the council about asylum seekers in Crewe (Crewe Nub News).

So far, 615 Ukrainians have come to Cheshire East on a three- year working visa.

Three Afghan families nationals have also settled into social housing within the Crewe area.

The funds provided by the Government to Cheshire East Council have been sufficient to cover all related temporary housing costs.

Cheshire East confirmed Rail House, Nantwich Road, was not being used to accommodate asylum seekers or refugees.
