A Cheshire man appeared at Crewe court to be handed a suspended jail sentence - after assaulting and hurling homophobic abuse at a police officer.

Daniel Carter, of Foden Walk, Wilmslow, appeared at Crewe Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 30 May to be sentenced for multiple offences.

The Crewe court heard the 25-year-old smashed the window and stole a Ring doorbell belonging to a Wilmslow woman on April 29, earlier this year.

Daniel Carter of Foden Walk, Wilmslow, assaulted a male police officer and shouted homophobic slurs at him - calling him a 'f****t' and a 'gay ginger' (Google).

Then as police got involved, Carter assaulted a male officer and shouted homophobic slurs at him - calling him a "f****t" and a "gay ginger".

Then, on his way to custody, Carter kicked out at officers.

The Cheshire man knocked over a cup of coffee - spilling the contents of the hot drink over the interior of a police vehicle.

At the court hearing on Monday 1 May, Carter pleaded guilty to both criminal damage (the window and the police vehicle) charges.

He returned to court at the end of the month where he also pleaded guilty to the remaining charges.

Crewe Magistrates' handed Carter a 10-week jail term but suspended it for 12 months - after taking his pleas into account.

Crewe Magistrates' Court handed Daniel Carter a 10-week jail term but suspended it for 12 months (Nub News).

The court heard the sentence would have been eight weeks.

This was uplifted due to the assault on an emergency worker and the homophobic nature of the abuse on them.

Crewe Magistrates' believed this was justified due to the seriousness of the unprovoked attack.

The sentence was suspended due to the belief Carter is able to be rehabilitated.

The Wilmslow man was ordered to pay £146 in compensation for the damaged window and £100 to the police officer.

The bench also imposed a restraining order banning the defendant from contact a specified woman or enter a specified address in Wilmslow. The order lasts until May 29, 2025.

The 10-week suspended jail sentence was uplifted due to the assault on an emergency worker and the homophobic nature of the abuse on them (Cheshire Police).

Carter must participate in rehabilitation activity up to a maximum of 25 days.

No order was made for costs as compensation was prioritised.
