Cheshire East's chief executive Rob Polkinghorne has left the council by mutual agreement after being absent for more than six months.

Mr Polkinghorne took up the role in January 2024.

The council said earlier this year he had been 'unwell' since the end of last year.

Today the authority issued a statement saying: "Rob Polkinghorne and Cheshire East Council have mutually agreed that he will step down from his role as chief executive.

"Rob wishes to focus on his family and future priorities.

"Rob also wishes to place on record his sincere appreciation for the dedication, professionalism and continued commitment shown by staff across Cheshire East Council in supporting residents and communities throughout the borough.

"The council will now begin recruitment for an interim chief executive.

"In the meantime, the chief executive's delegations and duties will continue to be covered by Helen Charlesworth-May, executive director for adults, health and integration, supported by the corporate leadership team."

The recruitment process to replace the chief executive is likely to be costly.

Cheshire East spent £37,736.84 on a 'rigorous recruitment and selection process' to appoint Mr Polkinghorne.

Didn't I read that there is a ban on recruitment in CEC, or does that actually just apply to the little people who actually do the work?
