Cheshire East reveals how many rough sleepers are in Crewe as cases rise in borough

Cheshire East Council has revealed how many rough sleepers are in Crewe and Nantwich - following a Freedom of Information request from a Crewe political party.

On Friday (December 9), political party, Putting Crewe First, received a response from Cheshire East Council - to a FOI about rough sleepers in the borough.

The response revealed 13 people are currently sleeping rough in Cheshire East - with four located in Crewe and Nantwich.

On Monday (December 12), Putting Crewe First released a statement on the rough sleepers FOI.

A statement read: "Following a Freedom of Information request from 'Putting Crewe First' it has been revealed that the last 12 months there has seen a significant increase in rough sleeping in Cheshire East.

"In relation to the number of rough sleepers, Cheshire East presently knows of 13 rough sleepers in the Borough, of which four are located in Crewe and Nantwich.

"We recently came across a rough sleeper outside Tesco, Vernon Way, in Crewe.

"He had a mobile phone and we gave him our number to ring or text if he wanted us to help him to get accommodation via the Council.

Putting Crewe First recently came across a rough sleeper outside Tesco, Vernon Way (Crewe Nub News).

"Cheshire East is aware of three rough sleepers in tents on the canal near Nantwich.

"One is a single male and the other two are a couple."

Cheshire East Council says it does not have a specific written rough sleeping policy.

It says a team of Rough Sleeping Outreach Workers make offers of accommodation to people sleeping outside.

Currently, there are two Emergency Accommodation in Crewe and one in Macclesfield.

Over the past 12 months, Cheshire East has seen a significant increase in rough sleeping (Ryan Parker).

This year's statistics average higher than the previous years of 2021, 2020, 2019 and 2018.
