Cheshire East Council says it is still "exploring options" for development of its Crewe town centre surface car parks, 12 months after the 395-space multi-storey car park opened.

The council's Crewe central car parks such as Delamere Street, Chester Street and Holly Bank could now be sold to "drive regenerative ambitions."

Cheshire East has stressed such developments take time, with the local authority not wanting to negatively impact regular users of the Crewe town centre surface car parks.

Crewe's £11m multi-storey car park, which opened on July 29 2024, is open 7am to 12am, Monday to Saturday (Ryan Parker).

Crewe's £11m multi-storey car park, accessed from Delamere Street is open 7am to 12am, Monday to Saturday.

In the first six months, the new car park made a loss of around £70,000, costing £87,000 to operate and bringing in just £17,244 in parking income.

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson told Nub News: "Crewe multi-storey car park has already allowed other car parks to be developed without losing parking spaces in the town.

"This includes both the popular Lifestyle Centre and YouthZone, a safe and aspirational place for young people. We are ambitious for Crewe and determined to unlock its full potential.

"Since the multi-storey car park and bus station have been completed, we have continued to explore options for our remaining surface car parks.

"This includes the potential sale of land where there are opportunities that will drive our regeneration ambitions for the town centre.

"This takes time, and we don't want any future closures of car parks to cause any problems for the people who currently use them.

"We also need to make sure we have enough spaces for new parking demands that may arise from future developments in the town.

"That is why it was important to get the multi-storey in place first."
