Child poverty 'should be focus' for council's new reducing inequalities commission

By Gwyn Griffiths 27th Aug 2021

A NEW task force is to look at inequalities in health outcomes across Cheshire East.

Cheshire East Council's health and wellbeing board approved the creation of a reducing inequalities commission this week with the remit to 'join existing inequalities work and examine where there are gaps'.

Cllr Kathryn Flavell, CEC Portfolio holder for Children and Families, said at the meeting: "It is a welcome idea to have an inequalities commission — I'd particularly like to see a focus on child poverty.

"It's something we don't seem to be addressing anywhere else, so if this is the place for it, I'd like to see a focus on what we can do to address that problem."

Cllr Laura Jeuda, Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care and Health, added: "I think it is a great idea, and I am totally in favour of it, but I do worry it could just become one of those quite big boards that we've got around the region anyway.

"I want it to happen, but I want it to happen fairly soon and for it not to be one of those great big monolithic boards."

Membership of the board has yet to be determined by Cheshire East officials.
