A British fashion retailer will be opening on Crewe's Grand Junction Retail Park - after submitting its new store signage proposals.

MATALAN submitted a planning application in May to construct illuminated signage at a vacant Grand Junction Retail Park unit.

This unit was previously occupied by Harvey's Furniture. The company officially went into administration in June 2020.

Currently, the closest Matalan store to Crewe is Woodland Street, Stoke-on-Trent.

Matalan was founded in 1985 by Mr John Hargreaves. The company was named after his two boys Matt and Alan, forming the title of Matalan.

The retailer is still owned by the Hargreaves family today.

For 37 years, Matalan has aimed to provide 'outstanding quality and value' for modern families.

As of April 2021 Matalan has 230 UK stores, employing approximately 13,000 people.

The illuminated signage proposals for its new Crewe store have been submitted by Sapphie, a signage company based in Kingston Upon Hull, East Yorkshire.

Matalan's headquarters is based at Knowsley, Merseyside.

The UK's leading kitchen retailer, Wren Kitchens, was initially expected to open inside the vacant Harvey's retail park unit.

It pulled out of the unit last year - despite recruiting for staff in 2021.

A Wren Kitchens spokesperson told Nub News: "We are no longer pursuing a showroom location in Crewe.

"We may look to relocate here again."

Benson for Beds, formerly located in the Harvey's retail park unit - relocated next to Food Warehouse.

Matalan is yet to have a larger mezzanine floor granted for the unit. The proposal is still pending.

The last day for submitting comments on the Matalan signage proposals is June 30. The target decision date is July 8.

Crewe Nub News has contacted Matalan for comment on its new store.
