Archaeologist visits Crewe site after old shop cellar uncovered in new scheme

An archaeologist was called to an area of Crewe, after the cellar of an old grocery shop was uncovered during the works of a new Crewe connectivity scheme.
The Mill Street Corridor scheme got underway in June 2025, one of nine projects being supported by the government's Towns Fund and Crewe's allocation of up to £22.9m of funding.
This scheme includes installation of a new shared cycleway/footway, new street lighting and improved signage, with works being delivered in phases by Cheshire East Council.
Taking around 30 weeks to complete, public space improvements will run along Nantwich Road, Pedley Street and Railway Street, cutting through Waverley Court and Wesley Place.
Work on the project was paused this September when the cellar of a former grocery shop was discovered by Waverley Court. It is understood it had been demolished around 1970.

A construction worker confirmed to Nub News the archaeologist found old signs relating to the shop within the cellar and took them away.
The old cellar has since been filled in, with works continuing on the Mill Street Corridor scheme.
A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council, said: "Works on this project were recently paused to agree an approach to working safely around the remains of a number of cellars from previously demolished properties.
"A working plan is now in place so that works can resume. An archaeologist will also be on-site."
Earlier this year, remains of the old Independent Methodist Chapel in Crewe were uncovered under the former Oak Street Car Park, along with historical items.
Following the exciting discovery by Caddick Construction, carrying out works for the new £8.3 million Crewe Youth Zone, Oxford Archaeology Lancaster were called to the site.
A series of items were found in the 10-metre by 20-metre trench, including a Victorian fireplace, indicating some sort of sitting room.

Other rooms were uncovered on the ground floor in the chapel. A Victorian stove was found indicating a kitchen.
In another discovery, a bottle storeroom was found with lots having 'Crewe' imprinted on them - the majority in very good condition.
A bigger room was found to the west of the smaller rooms, most likely where the congregation gathered.
As well as the chapel remains, archaeologists found a two-metre deep cellar in a former house next door.
