Advice issued after firefighters called to a portable BBQ left burning in Crewe

Firefighters used a water backpack to put out a disposable barbecue which has been left burning in Crewe.

One fire engine from Crewe went to the incident near Fourth Avenue at 8.22 pm last night (Sunday).

With the hot temperatures and sunny spells this week, there will be more people getting out the barbecue. But this could easily go awry.

So to prevent this weekend's incident from happening again, Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service has issued the following advice about disposable barbecues:

·      It must be placed on an even surface on either bricks or paving slabs.

·      Placed well away from the house, shed or fences.

·      It mustn't be used near or on public benches.

·      If you're using a disposable barbecue, ensure it has cooled before putting it in the bin.

·      To avoid starting a fire you should allow it to cool for several hours and then consider pouring water over it to make sure it's completely out and cold.

Disposable barbecues are banned by some chained stores in Crewe, but sold in others.

Crewe Fire Station is located on Crewe Road.
