Discount retailer Wilko has been saved by rival B&M.

The Nottinghamshire-based company went into administration which puts stores like Crewe Wilko in The Market Shopping Centre in danger.

It it has just been revealed that Merseyside-based retailers B&M - who already have two stores in Crewe including one in the Market Centre - are acquiring 51 Wilko sites.

Given that Wilko and B&M are located so close to each other in Crewe, it is unlikely that Crewe Wilko will remain open. But nothing is confirmed as of yet.

An update on whether Crewe Wilko could be 'saved' will be known in just over two months.

A statement from B&M's website read "B&M European Value Retail S.A. confirmed that it has entered into an agreement today with the joint administrators of Wilko Limited (in administration) to acquire up to 51 properties for the maximum aggregate consideration of £13,000,000."

"The consideration is fully funded from existing cash reserves and the acquisition is not expected to be conditional on any regulatory clearances.

"An update on the timing of these new store openings will be provided in the H1 interim results announcement on 9 November 2023."

The nearest Wilko store that is not in Crewe, is in Winsford. The future of that site also remains unclear.
