The Euros final may be on Sunday, but there is also Krazy Races, a landmark sporting event coming to Crewe for the first time.

On July 14, the Crewe Lyceum team will compete in Crewe's first ever soapbox race to raise funds for its youth program.

The theatre has teamed up with local artist Mark Haig from Gizmobots in crafting a unique and sturdy kart that is able to navigate through chicanes and obstacles.

The funds raised will be used to support the Crewe Lyceum Theatre's Summer Youth Project which aims to offer affordable summer activities for local young people aged 8 to 17.

Crewe Town Council and Crewe Lions club have both donated towards this scheme which helps young people to make friends, develop different skills and build up their confidence.

The creative learning and engagement manager at the theatre, Hollie Wimpenny said: "This is our second year of doing the summer youth project."

"It's where young people from across Crewe and the surrounding areas audition for a part and then every two weeks in August they put together a full-scale musical on our main stage."

This year's production is Bugsy Malone with 70 young people in the cast and will be performed on the 16th and 17th August.

Their participartion will promote next month's production of 'Bugsy Malone'.

"We try and give a professional experience for the cast," she said.

"We are having a live band, a full set hired out and professional costumes. Those in the production will work with a professional director, choreographer and musical director, so it's definitely that full professional experience for them.

Staff and volunteers at the theatre have all contributed in developing the Kart, as well as some young people on their work experience program who also had a hand in making and designing the go-kart.

Hollie said: "We have designed our go-kart based around our pantomime this year which is beauty and the beast, so we have called it Bell's Beast Kart."

This is the first time that Krazy Races has come to Crewe and will take place this weekend.

Taking place at 10:45am on Sunday, the free to attend event will bring all manner of fun, exciting races and activities to Crewe whilst raising substantial funds for local charities at the same time.

Teams brave enough to take on the challenge will be starting their downhill descent on Ford Lane.

Then, racers will take a sharp right hand turn bend onto Broad Street and zooming down past Brooklands.

Up to 20,000 people are expected to be in attendance cheering teams on as they cross the finish line (just before Badger Avenue).

Good luck!
