Poetic Crewe businessman pens new verse to honour Sir Captain Tom

By Gwyn Griffiths 1st Mar 2021

A CREWE businessman who has turned his hand to poetry penned an ode to Sir Captain Tom to mark the lockdown hero's funeral.

Gareth Williams, MD of Crewe Hall-based Construction Linx, has earned plaudits for performing his street poems on his YouTube channel after starting off writing verses about the 75th anniversary of VE Day during the first lockdown.

It inspired him to write some more and he now has a portfolio of 15 poems, which include wry observations of the challenges of lockdown as well as some humorous asides.

Gareth, 39, was determined to get his pen out again to honour the life of Sir Captain Tom Moore, whose funeral took place in his home town of Bedford last Saturday.

"Captain Tom touched the hearts and lives of so many people in this country and indeed around the world and I just had to put pen to paper to commemorate in my own way the fantastic work he did, not only for NHS but also in lifting the spirits of everyone during the lockdown," said Gareth.

"I've written a 100-word poem in memory for each of the 100 years this great man was with us."

Titled, 'The REAL Pride of Britain', here are Gareth's words:

Ring your bells, clap your hands for our beacon of hope

Take your party popper BANG and just watch it smoke

Our nation's national hero will be laid to rest

The best dressed, queen's guest who we've all been blessed

Conscripted to a life of service in 8th Battalion

Little would he know that he is our brave COVID stallion

When he decided to walk just 27 yards

Until sent for a knighthood beside the queen's guards

Take some time to remember his remarkable impact

In a world that is constantly seen as just………. abstract
