Crewe Nub News has outlined eight key reasons why Crewe has bid to become the Great British Railways Headquarters.

The towns bid to be the location of the Great British Railways Headquarters was officially submitted last Wednesday (March 19).

On Friday (March 21), key stakeholders and partners gathered at Crewe Train Station to mark the submission of Crewe's bid to be the location for the headquarters of Great British Railways.

Here are eight reasons why there is belief Crewe should be the Great British Railways Headquarters:

1. Crewe is at the heart of Britain's rail network, and rail is at the heart of Crewe.

- When the train station opened in 1837, Crewe was just a tiny village with a population of around 100 residents. The town was largely built by and for the railway and it grew massively.

2. Crewe has a proud rail heritage here, with rail in the blood of people in the town. Its long rail heritage has given it a strong local rail industry and skilled workforce, largely unmatched by anywhere else in Britain.

- Crewe Works was built in 1840 by the Grand Junction Railway. At its peak, Crewe Works employed around 20,000 workers.

3. Crewe people are proud of of the rail heritage in the town.

- Crewe Heritage Centre railway museum was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth the second in 1987 to celebrate Crewe's proud railway history.

4. Bringing the Great British Railways HQ to Crewe would be a spark to help level up the town and drive its rail-led regeneration, ahead of its key role at the heart of Britain's future rail network.

- HS2 and the GRB HQ would lead to huge infrastructure improvements, including a revamped train station. They will bring more jobs to the area and help the town to be funded for more regeneration projects.

5. Rail is central to Crewe's economy and GBR would unlock further growth and job creation in the area.

- HS2 is expected to bring 6,500 jobs between the West Midlands and Crewe. The Railway Headquarters would add to this tally even further.

6. Crewe's strategic location at the heart of Britain's rail network and as the gateway to the North, Midlands and Wales, will enable Great British Railways to have a positive ripple effect across the whole country.

- The likes of Liverpool, Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent and the midlands would be likely to benefit from the GRB HQ being in Crewe as opposed to further northern and southern locations, due to its central location.

7. Crewe is one of the most connected towns in the UK - the only station on the mainline connected to all regional capitals including Scotland and Wales.

- Crewe is a key transport hub for the North West and provides critical connectivity for both passengers and freight services across the entire country.

8. Crewe's role as one of the most connected interchanges in the country means that the benefits of bringing the headquarters here can flow throughout the country and not just level up here but surrounding areas.

- Crewe's central location makes it perfect for equal levelling up opportunities across the UK as opposed to the growth of just specific UK areas.

Following this bid, Crewe now needs the public's support – here in this town, across Cheshire and further afield.

The public will have the chance to vote on where they think the headquarters should be so it's important it gets this support.

On Friday (March 21), Crewe Nub News spoke to rail enthusiast Pete Waterman about why he thinks Crewe should secure the GRB HQ. Read what he said here.
