Senior / Design Engineer - Highways 35- 40 per hour (Inside IR35)Crewe (Hybrid - 3 days in office)Long-term contract We are seeking a Senior / Design Engineer to join a busy highways design team, delivering a variety of local authority projects. This is a long-term contract with hybrid working (typically 3 days in the office).
The RoleWith a strong pipeline of exciting projects, including individual schemes valued up to 5 million, you'll be involved in a wide range of programmes such as cycleway enhancements, junction upgrades, and public realm improvements. Alongside delivering day-to-day design engineering tasks, you'll also play a key role in supporting and mentoring junior engineers, fostering collaboration across the team, and ensuring technical excellence. Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver design engineering tasks across highways and local authority projects (dropped kerbs, junction improvements, traffic management works).
- Analyse engineering problems, apply technical expertise and judgement, and produce innovative solutions using complex interactive computer systems to meet legal and management objectives.
- Deliver professional and technical excellence in highway engineering, ensuring the highest standards of quality and innovation.
- Identify, prepare, design, plan, schedule, and procure work and services.
- Manage and monitor works programmes or services.
- Provide timely and accurate advice to Councillors, Parish Councils, and the public on highway-related matters as required.
- Provide technical support and mentorship to junior engineers, helping to develop and grow the team.
- Work collaboratively within the design team and with external stakeholders.
- Development of designs using AutoCAD (Civils 3D desirable).
- Production of scheme work packages including pre-construction information.
- Preparation of reports and attendance at meetings when required.
- Proven experience in 3D modelling (ideally highways or infrastructure).
- Ability to interpret and apply industry standards and technical specifications to design and modelling work.
- Collaborative approach, working effectively with project teams, clients, and stakeholders to meet project objectives.
- Knowledge of current UK highways standards (DMRB, Manual for Streets).
- Strong communication skills with the ability to present issues effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Understanding of design procedures, guidance, standards, and good practice documents.
- Professional, proactive, and able to represent the organisation effectively in all interactions.
