Wistaston tennis players stage tournament in memory of two club stalwarts
A NEW annual tennis tournament has been established in memory of two tennis club stalwarts.
Players at Wistaston Jubilee Tennis Club took part in the The Wistaston Cup with the round-robin tournament ending in a draw between Team Alan Jones and Team John White.
The Wistaston Cup was bought by Jonathan White, youngest son of John White, who presented it jointly to both teams in a ceremony earlier this month at the tennis club, which is based behind Wistaston Memorial Hall and Community Centre on Church Lane.
John, who passed away in July 2020, was a former chairman of the club. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award and Honorary Life Membership from the club in appreciation of his outstanding service from its foundation in June 1979.
He was also secretary of the South and Mid Cheshire Tennis League for over 30 years.
In 2011 he received the Honorary County Colours from the Cheshire Lawn Tennis Association for his long-standing services to the league.
The league's presentation day was renamed the 'John White Presentation Day' in his honour.
Alan passed away in July last year. A Cheshire county coach, he helped the club's youngsters and regulars develop their skills and was still turning out on court well into his eighties.
The club's annual junior tournaments have been renamed in memory of him.
George said: "I grew up being taught by both Alan Jones and John White. They got me into the game of tennis from the age of seven.
"Now I'm glad we have something set up to remember them both."
The tournament ran between September last year and January of this and involved two teams of eight players, with four matches over four rounds. Points were awarded for each set/match won.
