Crewe Alex have been drawn to face the under-21 academy side from Premier League outfit Newcastle United in the EFL Trophy.

The Railwaymen will play the youngsters from the top flight team in the group stages of the competition between lower league sides and academy teams from the biggest clubs in the country.

Bolton Wanderers and Shrewsbury Town are the two other sides in Group C of the Northern section of the draw.

The tournament is due to start on 8/9 September, although exact fixture dates will be confirmed at a later date.

On a busy day for newly instated League One side Crewe Alex, they were earlier drawn against Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup first round.
