A massive 37 per cent more working age households applied for council tax support in Cheshire East during the pandemic.

A report to Tuesday's (July 6) meeting of the council's corporate policy committee at Crewe Municipal Buildings showed that in May 2019 9,306 working age households applied for the support. In March 2021 that figure was 13,042, and in May it had dropped slightly to 12,827.

Recycling rates across Cheshire East could drop if the Government goes ahead with proposals which could see each household have up to six bins, councillors fear.

The Government wants a more consistent approach to the way waste is collected and recycled across England and has published consultations on new waste management and funding changes for 2023.

The MP is joined in his campaign by members of Shavington-cum-Gresty Parish Council who are concerned that they are being encouraged by Cheshire East Council into supporting the offloading of the building from the borough council's responsibility.

A specialist asbestos removal firm, that originally started off at Crewe Hall's Quadrangle just over two years ago has opened up a regional office in Crewe.

The company was founded by Tony Birchall, from the local area, who spent almost one year developing the business before applying for an asbestos removal licence. The company was granted a licence by the HSE in December 2019.

COUNCIL health chiefs say they remain concerned about the increase in Covid-19 cases across Cheshire East.

The borough was designated as an Enhanced Response Area on June 14 with high rates of infection identified in Crewe and Macclesfield. But cases of the highly-transmissible Delta variant have continued to rise, more recently in Congleton, Middlewich and Sandbach.
