CREWE'S bid to become the headquarters of the Great British Railways is on track and it makes "perfect sense" to locate it in the town, Cheshire East Council's deputy leader says.

The government launched the competition to find a location for the headquarters of the Great British Railways last month with places with strong historical links to the railway encouraged to make their case.

The Crewe to Nantwich Greenway near to the Rising Sun on Middlewich Road.

ACTIVE travel campaigners are asking Cheshire East Council to work with HS2 to create a greenway network north of Crewe to Middlewich and Winsford.

Peter Foster, of Active Travel Crewe, has highlighted HS2's environmental statement which states the aim of creating a green corridor along the new railway, in particular by providing funds to help local people realise their own green infrastructure projects.

With International Women's Day next Tuesday, (March 8th), the most recent UK employment statistics make for positive reading, as the North West experienced a significant annual decrease to female unemployment (-28%).

The collective performance of all twelve UK regions equates to a small, yet much-welcomed annual improvement to the overall female employment rate, with 72% of women aged 16-64 currently in work. The only regions to experience an increase in female unemployment were the South East (+33.4%), North East (+24%) and Scotland (+7.5%).

A Crewe man has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after a fatal crash on Haymoor Green Road in Blakelow.

Mark Taylor, 38, of Railway Street, Crewe, has also been charged with assault, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, causing death while driving without a license and causing death while driving without insurance.
