A WISTASTON mother has raised over £22,000 in three days to send her son for vital cancer treatment overseas.

Georgy Capener has undergone four rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy after his mother Helen learnt that her son's Ewing Sarcoma has returned.

The 11-year-old had battled the rare condition two years ago, but medics found the cancer has re-emerged in Georgy's sinus, eye socket and nose.

He was rushed back to hospital after scans showed it had destroyed part of Georgy's cheekbone and was growing into his skull.

Helen says the family have researched treatment options and accept the condition cannot be treated in the UK. But they have held lengthy discussions with a stem cell transplant hospital in a medical treatment centre in Asia which is willing to accept Georgy.

The transplant will involve removing the faulty mother cell and harvesting new purified cells from a donated umbilical cord into Georgy's body to stop the cancer from returning. The procedures, which will cost around £130,000, have very high success rates and the family are optimistic about his future.

Helen started a Just.Giving page on Monday and in less than three days £22,243 has been raised for the cause.

The page, "Were raising £120,000 to help raise funds for life saving treatment for our son" has pledges from around 750 supporters, including one anonymous donation of £2,000.

Helen said: "I am beyond speechless. The amount of support off everyone has been absolutely amazing and I'm sorry if I haven't replied to everyone but my phone has been manic all day. I've had children donating their pocket money - one lovely girl has donated the money from selling her bike."

Georgy was first diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma on Easter Sunday two years ago after a fall in a friend's garden saw him pay a visit to A&E.

His parents were given the devastating news he was suffering from the very rare bone cancer. Georgy's treatment involved the removal of his right arm, which was replaced with a prosthetic limb, but he was in remission by March last year and life appeared to have returned to normal.

Now he is facing another battle and Helen hopes she can hit her fundraising target by the beginning of September which is when Georgy's final round of chemo is scheduled.

"We would have to start this procedure straight after that to ensure the cancer doesn't return straight away, which unfortunately gives us very little time to raise this amount," said Helen.

"We are setting this fundraising up with the hope that we can raise some of this amount to help save our sons life. It is our only realistic option and for the first time in a long time we can be positive and see some sort of future."

And she added: "Patients with relapsed Ewing's have a very poor prognosis and as his parents, we are determined to try and raise as much as we can so our gorgeous boy can live a carefree life, something he has not had for three years now.

"Throughout all of Georgy's treatment we have been absolutely amazed with our NHS, he wouldn't be here now without them but the cost of this treatment is going to be around the region of £130,000 which simply cannot be funded by our NHS and we really do understand this.

"Georgy has always taken his illness in his stride, he is a well-mannered and courageous young man and has the best sense of humour ever! When we told him about the possibility of having this procedure his reply was "will I still have my memory?"

Helen says she plans on regularly updating all supporters with Georgy's progress.
