What are Crewe's hidden gems? You have your say on our town's special places

WHAT are the hidden gems of Crewe?

This is the question we asked Crewe residents online recently because Nub News wants to hear about some of the places that make you happy.

There's plenty to be down about at the moment. The lockdown seems never ending and when you do go out for essential journeys the sight of major redevelopment work in the town centre can all look a bit depressing.

But there are many things in Crewe that are not of the past, nor of the future, and are worth savouring now, or very soon we hope.

So we decided to appreciate things we can enjoy in the present and look forward to seeing and visiting them again once lockdown ends.

We received comments from those hidden gems in and around the town that often go unnoticed and unheralded.

Pubs and arts venues featured, particularly, among those places held most dear to Crewe people.

Here's what you had to say…

Jen Ogle said: "Tom's Taphouse and Brewery on Thomas Street produces the most incredible beers. In non-Covid times this place had become a proper community hub, with art exhibitions, live music, open mic nights, games afternoons, vinyl night and cheese and visiting brewer evenings.

"It had the best welcoming atmosphere with beer, cider and Jacqui's amazing cocktails. Gosh I miss all that!"

Diane Scoffin said: "I love the Christadelphian building (church). Sometimes it gets missed because is it set back from the road."

Ian Affleck said: "Hops. A great bar and sadly missed due to Covid-19."

Tracey Hale said: "Giovannis (restaurant) on Nantwich Road is great."

Among Jonathan White's favourite places are those which have played their part in the town's history, or document it. Not quite hidden gems, but still "jewels in the crown'; they include the Lyceum Theatre - let's hope we can get back there later this year; Queens Park and Crewe Heritage Centre.

Like many out there Grant Coiley is missing the town's pubs when he picked out a lesser-known drinking establishment, which has changed its name a few times in recent years.

"The Crafty Beggar on Mill Street. An absolute belting pub" commented Grant.
