AT Crewe Nub News we aim to support our community, promoting shops, businesses, charities, clubs and sports groups.

We will be profiling some of these businesses and organisations as well as the personalities involved in them in a feature called 'Up Close in Crewe'.

The Cat 107.9FM is the town's popular community radio station. It has been going from strength to strength since it was awarded an FM licence by Ofcom in 2014 - it began broadcasting daily in February the following year.

Among its current rising stars is local teenager Luke Reynolds, who takes his passion for radio home with him literally - for he has set up his own radio studio in his home.

With four years' experience at the mic already behind him at age of 19, Luke's talents have earned him exposure on four other stations, but it is at The Cat that he is making waves with his sports coverage.

He is in the presenting seat for the station's Saturday Sport show (3 to 6pm) and is gathering a reputation for covering grassroots sports around Crewe and Nantwich as well as other parts of South Cheshire.

Luke recalled: "I moved to a new house last Christmas and I had a look around at different stations in the area and The Cat stood out for me.

"I listened to it for several days and I was so impressed that I contacted them expressing my interest. It's a real pleasure to be part of the community as that is at the heart of everything The Cat does.

"I have met friends for life here and all of us are obsessed with radio and creating exciting programmes.

"The Cat is a message board for the local area and being the sports presenter means I get to visit local clubs to take in matches and get content for my sports show."

The teenager was drawn to radio after setting up his own online station as a youngster. Playing music to listeners to keep them entertained fascinated him, but he has since developed a wide musical taste and sees his duties as informing his audience as well.

His shows delve into a back catalogue of 1950s music, including jazz. And he recommends anyone interested in working in radio take time listening to different types and decades of music to build up a wider understanding.

His shows are a mixture of pre-recorded shows from the home studio and live shows from Cat's South Cheshire College base.

Luke also has shows on Big City Radio 89.1FM, where he takes the breakfast presenting duties, Rainbow FM, Oystermouth Radio, and Purtians Radio.

He says joining a community radio station is a superb path into a competitive industry with on-the-job training as well as the chance to develop and become a confident performer on air.

He added: "I hope to never stop radio presenting as I've been very lucky to work for some fantastic stations who are all doing their bit for the community."

Chris Cadman, Managing Director at The Cat, said: "It was a real pleasure to welcome Luke as a presenter to The Cat because he is so enthusiastic. He has a real passion for radio.

"We set out to encourage, train and give people that vital broadcast experience they need to build a career in this industry.

"Having already helped over twenty people gain full-time employment in the commercial TV and radio sector we hope Luke's experience at The Cat will help him move another step closer to his long-term goal."

The Cat broadcasts 24-hours a day on 107.9 FM and online at.
