UP CLOSE: Bagel business booming at new Crewe bun shop

Business is so good at Crewe's new Holy Bun café that it regularly runs out of freshly-baked bagels. The eatery is fast becoming popular among locals, close to the busy food stretch of Nantwich Road.

"Some days we have even run out twice," says joint owner Magda Martin, 29, who opened the business on 23rd January.

"My mum Jola (Sobolewska - other joint owner, 48) was baking all day just to keep up with demand."

The business name, 'Holy Bun' is a fun play on words referring to the hole within the bun. You can eat-in or takeaway a bagel at 1 Ruskin Road.

Mrs Martin told Crewe Nub News: "It's exciting to be opening in Crewe. There is so much room for the café and restaurant industry to expand in this town and it seems like people are excited for it.

"The Holy Bun is my creation. I have been baking bagels for my family for years, and mum is an incredible cook, as proclaimed by all of her family and friends. Between us, running a food business seemed like the obvious choice."

There was an initial planned opening for the former Tattoo Studio unit in December. This was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bagel shop has a menu consisting of 12 bagels, served throughout breakfast and lunch.

When talking about inspiration for the food, Mrs Martin added: "Some are very much American inspired, such as the BEC which is bacon, egg and cheese. There is also salt beef and smoked salmon with cream cheese. Others options are much more British such as egg mayo and BLT."

The Holy Bun also serve skin on fries, loaded fries and loaded salad options.

Earlier this month, the Holy Bun gave a positive update to customers via their Facebook page: "We have learnt that we have the best, patient, kind and generous customers, they leave the nicest of reviews."

The café has continued to sell out of bagels on many days since opening: "We've learned to anticipate and prepare for the inevitable bagel rush."

Following a joint-decision, opening hours were adjusted: "We have learnt that the people of Crewe are not early risers, and not looking for lunch past 3pm."

From now on, Monday to Friday the business will be open from 8am to 3:30pm, and 9am until 3:30pm on Saturdays. Sundays remain closed.
