A Crewe town centre bakery has abruptly announced it will close this week, less than five months after opening and shortly after recruiting new staff.

Grab & Go Bakery, Market Street, confirmed it will cease trading at 3pm on Friday 24 April, shocking customers and employees.

The closure comes less than five months after launch, with the business only opening on 1 December. It has also only been under new management for a month.

Grab & Go Bakery, which sells the likes of jacket potatoes, breakfast rolls and pies, had recently brought in new team members, making the sudden shutdown even more unexpected.

In a statement, Grab & Go's departing manager said: "Dear customers, It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that Grab & Go Bakery will be closing this Friday, April 24 at 3pm.

"This will be when we close our doors for the final time. We will be heavily reducing stock over the next few days, including pies and bacon butties, as we would love to sell everything and avoid waste.

'Please keep an eye out and come grab your favourites while you still can.

"Firstly, I just want to apologise that this has come as such a shock. It has been just as unexpected for us too. I truly gave this my all.

"During my time here, I doubled and even tripled sales, achieved a four out of five rating with Environmental Health, and got us nominated for the Cheshire Retail Business Awards under the Best Bakery category.

"We also had a lot of competition around us, with Subway just two doors down, as well as Chatwins and Greggs up the road, plus other cafes with great reputations.

"It really does show how well we were doing to still achieve what we did. I worked long hours just to make sure we were pushing this bakery as far as possible.

"From bringing respect back into the building to carrying out a full six-and-a-half-hour deep clean to get us where we needed to be, I put everything into this.

"I had so many ideas and plans but unfortunately the business is struggling financially.

"Tony (Owner) and Alan (Director/Manager) also want to say a huge thank you to every single one of you who supported us over this past month. You made Grab & Go what it was.

"They've said themselves that if I had been here from the beginning, things could have been so different, and they've been so happy with the work I've done.

"I've met some amazing people along the way, building relationships with our lovely customers and with Mollie, our final team member.

"Although her time with us has been short and sweet, she has done such an incredible job and should be so proud of herself.

"I am honestly so sad to be letting this go but life goes on, and I will never forget this experience.

"Thank you all again for your kindness, support, and loyalty, it has meant more than you will ever know.

"Please come and see us before Friday at 3pm. It would mean the world to say goodbye properly."

Grab & Go Bakery took over a Market Street unit previously earmarked for bubble tea shop Bobobo, which never opened following multiple start-up issues.

The shop's short-lived opening shows the financial challenges facing independent traders in Crewe town centre.

Was this the result of Labour Party policy decisions or another sign retail outlets in Crewe lack support from Cheshire East Council?

Such a shame
