Crewe-based BYD's charging breakthrough to transform EV ownership in UK
By Ryan Parker 12th Jun 2026
Crewe-based electric vehicle giant BYD has unveiled groundbreaking charging technology in the UK, aiming to dramatically reduce charging times and help tackle one of the biggest concerns among motorists considering the switch to electric.
The Chinese manufacturer, which has become one of the world's fastest growing EV brands, has showcased its new ultra-rapid charging system capable of adding significant driving range in as little as five minutes.
This technology uses chargers capable of delivering up to 1,500kW of power, making them considerably faster than most public chargers currently available in the UK.
BYD plans to roll out hundreds of these new chargers across the UK as part of a wider European expansion, with the first installations expected to appear at key motorway and trunk road locations.
The company believes the technology could make charging an electric vehicle almost as convenient as filling up a petrol or diesel car.

While only a small number of vehicles can currently take advantage of the full charging speed, the announcement is being seen as a major step forward for the wider EV market.
Industry experts have long identified charging times as one of the main barriers preventing some drivers from making the move to electric.
BYD says its latest battery and charging technology can take a compatible vehicle from 10 per cent to 70 per cent charge in around five minutes, with a nearly full charge possible in under ten minutes.
The development comes as electric vehicle adoption continues to grow across the UK, supported by an expanding charging network and increasing model choice.
If the technology proves successful at scale, it could help make long distance EV travel even more practical for motorists.
For drivers considering an electric vehicle, innovations such as this demonstrate how rapidly the technology is evolving, with charging times continuing to move closer to the convenience offered by traditional fuel stations.
