COUNCILLORS are calling for a regeneration project at Crewe's former baths to start as soon as possible.

Flag Lane baths has fallen into disrepair since it was closed in 2016 after the opening of new swimming facilities at Crewe Lifestyle Centre.

A project initiated by the Always Ahead Charity, established by the Lighthouse Centre, on Stewart Street, estimated £3.5 million was needed to convert the listed building into a community hub.

Now Labour councillors have launched a campaign in support of the regeneration work.

Connor Naismith, Labour candidate for Cheshire East's Crewe West seat, says the aim is to "build and harness support" for the proposals.

The art-deco building, originally opened in the 1930s, has been hit by recent incidents of vandalism, littering and other anti-social behaviour.

"It is a travesty that a building containing so many fond memories for so many residents has been reduced to it's current state," said Mr Naismith.

"I know that councillor Brian Roberts was really passionate about this project before he passed away last year and I am proud to be continuing that support in his memory. The current proposals are really exciting for the local area and I want to see them given the security they need by an end to the delay."

The proposals for the community hub include a meeting space for local groups, an arts and performance space, a café and an outdoor splash park.

Mr Naismith is asking residents to support his call to "avoid delay and begin work on the site at the earliest opportunity" by signing an online petition.

When the project was first mooted the charity planned 18 months of fundraising so as to be on track to open the hub in September this year.

That schedule has been impacted by the pandemic, but it is understood that the Flag Lane regeneration is among the projects considered by Crewe Town Board to secure government funding under the Towns Fund investment plan.

Crewe South councillor Laura Smith has backed the scheme and she added: "When I was Crewe and Nantwich MP and ever since I have been struck by it's potential.

"It can breathe new life into this building and this area, providing a really unique space for families in Crewe and Nantwich and further afield to come and enjoy themselves.

"Crewe both needs and deserves the various regeneration projects, including this one, to proceed without delay."
