THE future of Shavington Youth Club's premises is in doubt if it is sold off to developers, it has been claimed.

The club secured a one-year extension on its lease from Cheshire East Council before last year's lockdown. But the centre in the former village school on Main Road needs significant repairs and has remained closed.

Crewe and Nantwich MP Kieran Mullan says it is a "long treasured asset for the local community" that needs to be protected.

The MP says he has been working with Shavington parish councillors and the youth club's officials to resolve the building's future, but so far without a resolution

He said: "There is now a serious risk that Cheshire East will try and offload the building to private developers or pressure the parish council into taking ownership of it. It could then be left with the bill to pay for its repair and upkeep, which is potentially more than the entire current parish council budget."

A survey, drafted by the MP, aims to gauge the support in the village for retaining the building's use as a youth club and extending its use across the community as a base for other activities such as exercise classes and luncheon clubs for older people.

You can find it here.

"I think residents will want to work with me and other parish council members to get Cheshire East back to the table to agree a way forward which gets the building repaired and back into use," added the MP.

Cheshire East Council has been approached for a comment.
