Plans have been put forward to turn a former gym building into a new privately funded Crewe Kurdish Community Centre.

This May, Crewe Kurdish Community submitted a certificate of lawful development on behalf of Eaton Court, Eaton Street.

Proposals at the former Team Changi Academy include building improvements, with current hard standing to be resurfaced with tarmac, along with new surface water drainage.

The new Crewe Kurdish Community centre plans to include a 'Wudu' area, dedicated for the Islamic ritual of washing before daily prayers.

A kitchen, office, community room and gym is also planned, along with toilets.

15 car parking spaces are proposed, including three disabled spaces.

Team Chongi Academy operated in Eaton Court for 12 years, running the likes of self-defence and fitness classes.

In 2024, it relocated to The Camm Street Centre when plans were approved to convert Eaton Court into eight, two-bedroom apartments.

The last date for submitting comments is Thursday 28 May, with a target decision date of Thursday 2 July.

This should get rejected. I encourage everyone to object to this on the planning explorer.

The fact is we have British community centres - they're called pubs. In fact I can remember when there was a private members "community centre" for a specific type of brit in Eaton St - it closed down and now meets in a pub.

The questions to be asked are:

if there is a demand for a british community centre why has nobody put up the money for it - or at least started a campaign to raise the money?

one which also should have been asked a few years ago about Webb House - where did this group get their money from?

and some which the group themselves should have asked - since the building has planning consent for 8 decent appartments likely to be worth around £750k why was it advertised for sale at "offers over freehold value"? Why did someone walk away from what could have been a 6 figure profit? Is there a problem with the structure?

Can’t they just build a ‘community center’ why does it have to be for a specific group.. not really helping people to integrate if you keep separating groups out,,, feels a bit racist actually,, pretty sure if plans were submitted for an ‘British’ centre this would be branded as a far right meeting hub.
