Plans to convert 'dilapidated' Crewe town centre building into retail and apartments

Plans have been submitted to convert a three-storey Crewe town centre building into a mixed-use scheme, made up of ground floor retail units and upper floor apartments.
Applicant, Mr M Housainee, of Talo Properties Ltd, has put forward plans on behalf of 56-58 Market Street, occupied by Boots Pharmacy until April 2022.
The applicant wants to convert the existing commercial building into four retail units at ground floor, with 17 one-and-two-bed residential units on the upper floors.

Mr Housainee has also proposed to demolish the existing rooftop plant store with a new residential rooftop extension.
Resident access is proposed to the rear of the building with post and bin store in close proximity.
The Market Street corner building, which borders Earle Street and Sandon Street, was sold at auction for £300,000 in April 2024.
Constructed in 1960, the former Boots building was rebuilt following demolition during WWII in 1945.
The applicant has slammed the previous tenants of the Crewe town centre building, who claim they allowed the building to fall into an "unacceptable" level of disrepair.
A design and access statement reads: "The planning application in which this statement relates seeks to develop the now unused Boots building situated at 56-58 Market Street, Crewe.
"The building is currently vacant as its retail and commercial interests were made redundant.

"The building remains in a dilapidated state, with a mix of aesthetic alterations and degradations performed by previous custodians of the once revered brutalist landmark of the high street.
"The proposal will bring about much needed housing, and serve to enhance the area by providing new retail opportunity for businesses and consumers alike.
"Over time, the building has been subject to numerous occupants and internal reconfigurations.
"In the recent past, the building has been vacated and remains unoccupied.
"It is noted legal proceedings were taken against the former tenants for allowing an unacceptable level of dilapidation to occur.
"The building is visibly in disrepair and in need of renovation to attract new occupation to a prominent high-street Location.

"Talo properties are committed to to this goal with their proposed development."
The last date for submitting comments on this application is Wednesday 21 May, with a target decision date of Tuesday 27 May.
