Plans have been submitted for 47 'affordable' retirement apartments on farmland - located off a narrow road in Crewe.

Bowsall Developments Ltd and Housing 21 have applied to Cheshire East Council for permission to bulldoze all buildings at Sydney Cottage Farm, Herbert Street.

The developer wants to replace the buildings with a three-storey block of one and two-bed apartments for people over the age of 55.

The development would comprise 47 independent elderly living apartments in a three-storey high, 'U' shaped block (Google).

A design and access statement submitted on behalf of the applicants by JDA Architects says: "The proposed scheme provides appropriately sized independent retirement living units catering to persons aged 55 years and above.

"The scheme is located at the edge of an existing settlement with public transport links, public open space, local shops and medical services within walking distance."

The development would be 100% affordable housing in the form of social rent, which exceeds council policy.

It would comprise 47 independent elderly living apartments in a three-storey high, 'U' shaped block.

The report states: "A mix of one and two-bedroom units have been sensitively designed for persons over the age of 55. A communal lounge, amenity space and supporting staff area are situated on the ground floor."

It adds the proposal would provide 'much needed elderly living apartments to the local area'.

The developer wants to replace the Sydney farm buildings with a three-storey block of one and two-bed apartments for people over the age of 55 (Google).

The 0.52 hectare plot is currently used for the supply of sundries to the horticultural industry.

The majority of the site comprises hard-standing, a large storage building and some smaller buildings. The remaining eastern section of the site comprises grassland and is currently used for grazing cattle.

It also includes a pond surrounded by trees in the south west corner. This, the report states, has become strewn with debris.

The proposal would include re-directing a public right of way and relocating some overhead power lines.

The application, 22/4698N, can be viewed on the planning portal on Cheshire East's website.
