Rail passengers have been advised 'not to travel'

Disruption affecting services in and out of Crewe has continued for a second day.

It follows damage to the overhead electric wires at Manchester Piccadilly.

The National Rail website says: "As a result of this, some lines have been closed and a number of platforms at the station are out of use.

"Trains may be cancelled, revised or severely delayed by up to 60 minutes.

"Major disruption is expected until the end of the day."

Below, you will find details about how this disruption affects CrossCountry, Avanti West Coast and Northern services.

Avanti West Coast

Avanti West Coast trains will not call at Manchester Piccadilly.

Tickets for travel on the Manchester Piccadilly route dated for Thursday 16 and Friday 17 will be valid for travel today (Friday 17) and tomorrow (Saturday 18) at no extra cost.

You can use your ticket (in both directions) at no extra cost on the following:

  • Bee Network buses between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport in both directions on routes 192 and 203
  • CrossCountry services between Stockport and Birmingham New Street
  • London Northwestern Railway services between Stafford and London Euston

If your train is cancelled, your ticket is valid on one of the two Avanti West Coast services immediately before your booked train, or one of the two immediately after.

If you no longer wish to travel because your train's delayed or cancelled, you can request a full refund from where you bought your ticket.

CrossCountry

If your train is cancelled, your ticket can be used at no extra cost on the two CrossCountry services operating before and after your cancelled service.

Your ticket can also be used, at no extra cost, on the following:

  • Avanti West Coast services between Nuneaton and Stockport
  • Northern services between Stoke-on-Trent and Manchester Piccadilly

Limited road transport is in place. Please see departure boards for further information and listen for station announcements, or find a member of station staff who can assist you in locating the road transport from at your required station.

Passengers affected by the disruption travelling to / from stations north of Macclesfield, may use tickets dated for Thursday 16 April on services today, Friday 17 April.

Me.crewe

A very detailed list - sadly based on AI generated tosh from National Rail and proof that you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet!

I arrived at Piccadilly at 18:15 yesterday for the 18:30 fast train to Crewe - it was cancelled (except it wasn't, it started at Wilmslow instead). The 18:06 local train was delayed and still boarding but was so overcrowded I let it go because on the next platform the 18:36 local via the airport was due ON TIME. Actually it left a few minutes late due to another train needed to cross in front but it arrived at Crewe on time and there were plenty of empty seats, especially after Wilmslow. According to internet reports nothing to Crewe ran and I am still stuck in Manchester!

Today some trains from Crewe to Manchester are running, especially those via the Airport (and if you can get to the airport and it goes wrong rail tickets are being accepted on the tram into the city centre). As I've typed this the 09:30 fast train from Crewe has just arrived at Piccadilly with only about 10 minutes delay. So if you NEED to go to/via Manchester, Stockport or Manchester Airport don't panic, check the journey planner on the National Rail website not their auto generated news.
