Over 60 patients have reported being sexually abused while under the care of Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT) in the past three years, according to figures from a Freedom of Information (FOI) request by Sexual Abuse Compensation Advice.

The trust, which operates Leighton Hospital, Victoria Infirmary, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre, says it works closely with police and partner agencies where necessary to investigate allegations.

The data shows a steady rise in allegations over the period with 24 in 2022/23, 27 in 2023/24, and 31 in 2024/25.

Patients made the majority of complaints, increasing from 14 in 2022/23 to 26 in 2024/25.

Reports by staff decreased from 10 to four over the same period, while one allegation was made by a visitor in 2024/25.

The total number reflects reported incidents and allegations over the three-year period, not confirmed findings of sexual assault or abuse.

Despite the volume of reports, relatively few cases resulted in formal disciplinary action, with seven staff members disciplined over the three years.

Only one was dismissed in connection with a sexual offence.

A spokesperson for Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust told Nub News: "We have a zero-tolerance approach to any form of sexual harassment, abuse or inappropriate behaviour towards patients, visitors or staff.

"As a Trust signed up to the NHS Sexual Safety in Healthcare Charter, we are committed to actively tackling sexual harassment and abuse and ensuring clear, accessible reporting mechanisms are in place.

"The figures referenced relate to reports and allegations rather than confirmed findings.

"We actively encourage staff, patients and visitors to report any behaviour that makes them feel uncomfortable or unsafe and we have clear and accessible mechanisms in place to support this.

"A strong reporting culture is vital to ensuring concerns are addressed appropriately and that everyone feels safe to speak up.

"When concerns are raised, they are taken extremely seriously. We investigate promptly and thoroughly, take appropriate action to protect those affected, provide support where needed and work closely with the police and partner agencies where required.
