'Fantastic' new £2.4m boxing gym officially launches in Crewe

Young people in Crewe have a lot to celebrate after South Cheshire Amateur Boxing Club officially launched its new £2.4 million boxing gym in the town on Friday 27 June.
In a collaborative project between South Cheshire Amateur Boxing Club and Crewe Youth Club, the state-of-the-art boxing gym and youth space at Mirion Street, is the first purpose-built youth space in Crewe in over 60 years.
The new boxing gym has been funded by the UK Government's Towns Fund (£1.19m), the UK Government's Youth Investment Fund (£820k), the Garfield Weston Foundation (£150k), the Community Ownership Fund (£300k), and the Improved, Greener, Communities Facilities Fund (£15k).

MP for Crewe and Nantwich, Connor Naismith, said: "Having been engaged with this project since long before the General Election, I am over the moon for Rob, Mike, Nathan and all of the young people who will benefit from this facility now it has been delivered.
"The Trustees have worked tirelessly to bring this project from ambition to reality, and they should be applauded for all of that work, which will be of significant benefit to the individuals who use the facility and the wider town in Crewe.
"Sport can play a crucial role in the development of young people, both in terms of physical activity, discipline and broader skills applicable to other areas of life.
"It is therefore fantastic to see this partnership between local government, central government, the third sector and the wider community deliver a project which will provide these opportunities to our young people."
Minister for Sport, Media, Civil Society and Youth, Stephanie Peacock MP, joined young boxers and guests at the official ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the centre's grand opening.
Head Coach and founder of South Cheshire Amateur Boxing Club, Nathan Clarke, said: "We are all so excited to see our fantastic new facility come to life.

"We have built it and now we want to see young people flooding through the doors. We have a dedicated coaching team ready to go, and some amazing new equipment, including two full-size boxing rings.
"Boxing is not only a brilliant way to keep fit, and learn about discipline, structure and growth, our coaches bring much more than just boxing, their support makes a huge difference to young people's lives.
"The gym will be a welcoming space for every young person who wants to get involved.
"Working alongside other agencies, including Cheshire East Council, the NHS, local Schools and the Police, the Mirion Street Centre will give young people in the area a fantastic central access point to help get support and guidance. "
The South Cheshire Amateur Boxing Club promotes community cohesion through its 'open door policy', encouraging local community members to attend, commit to the club values and code of behaviour, regardless of gender, disability, age, ethnicity or culture.
The Clubs informal motto, and an inspiration for this project, is "All Different. All Equal."

Chair of Crewe Youth Club, Mike Morris, said: "Today is an historic moment; working together we've built a state-of-the-art space for young people on land that had been derelict for over ten years."
South Cheshire Amateur Boxing Club is hosting an open day at the new boxing club from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 28 June.
