SHOPPERS were up bright and early for the opening of Crewe's new Lidl store today.

The supermarket on the new Dorothy Flude Retail Park opens from 8am to 10pm Mondays to Saturdays (10am to 4pm on Sundays) and trade was brisk from the off.

Lidl have joined B&M and a drive-thru Costa Coffee outlet on the retail site named after late Crewe South councillor Dorothy, who campaigned for the former derelict site to be redeveloped despite initial opposition from planning officials. Both B&M and Costa opened earlier this summer.

In all 40 jobs have been created at Lidl, which recently revealed it was seeking to set up at least one other store in the Crewe area.

The supermarket chain has more than 20 new stores opening so far this year and has set itself a 1,000 store milestone in the UK by end of 2023, with around 860 stores currently open.

Lidl says that during the first week of opening Crewe customers will be able to find exclusive deals and offers on selected products.

These include a Slow Cooker 3.7L Crock-Pot (£9.99), a Sunrise simulation alarm clock (£9.99) and a Chicco Next2Me Side Sleeping Crib (£79.99).

The new store has a 1,325m² of sales space, including an in-store bakery, while there is parking for both cars and bikes outside.

Crewe's newest retail park also includes an electric vehicle (EV) charging area.

Lidl GB's Regional Head of Property Dominic Bryan said: "We would like to thank all those who have played a part in bringing this first Lidl Store to Crewe, in particular Clowes Developments and the late Councillor Dorothy Flude whose support and dedication helped to deliver this development for the public."

Lidl are recommending those customers who can wear face coverings inside the store.
