This September, Crewe residents and visitors are invited to see the town centre in a whole new light through Re-opening Crewe, an imaginative walking experience forming part of Heritage Open Days 2025.

Supported by Crewe Town Council and delivered in partnership with Crewe Library, the project transforms the streets of central Crewe into a playful, creative space encouraging participants to slow down and look at their surroundings differently.

The walks draw on ideas from psychogeography, first popularised by French thinker Guy Debord, as well as practices of slow looking and situational art.

Independent curator, Sergey Kamenskiy, who has spent years researching creative walking methods from artists and urban thinkers worldwide, has developed the Crewe experience.

His inspirations range from John Berger's mindful, detail-focused observations to Jan Gehl's sensory explorations of city life.

"This is not a history tour, say organises, "It is an open invitation to notice the small things and explore how imagination can reshape our sense of place."

Each participant selects two of 36 specially designed game cards, with prompts that might encourage them to sketch overlooked details, invent stories about architectural features, or capture the sounds of the street.

Walkers take part in small groups, sharing impressions, swapping cards, and documenting their discoveries through photos, drawings, notes or found objects.

At the end of each walk, participants can contribute their favourite pieces to a public exhibition at Crewe Library, showcasing the many different ways people experience the same streets.
