New book celebrates Crewe’s railway families and working-class heritage

A new history book is shining a spotlight on Crewe's proud railway past through the lives of one working-class family.
From Fields to Railways: The Jenkins Family and the Making of Working-Class Britain by Antony David Davies FRSA traces the journey of the Jenkins family from the fields of Herefordshire, through the farms of North Wales, and to Crewe, the town they made their home.
Like thousands of others, the Jenkinses were drawn to Crewe in the late 19th century by the opportunities offered at the London and North Western Railway Works.

Their sons and daughters lived and worked in the town, experiencing both the hardships and the solidarity of railway life.
From tragic accidents on the line to the close-knit support of chapels and neighbourhoods, their story reflects the struggles and resilience of many Crewe families.
Antony, the author and great-grandson of Crewe driver Alfred Jenkins, told Nub News:
"The Jenkins family story is deeply personal to me, but it is also part of Crewe's wider history.
"In telling it, I wanted to honour the dignity and endurance of the working-class families who built this town."

The book combines family history with wider social history, using parish records, census returns, and old family documents to bring to life a century of change.
It offers not only a portrait of one family but also an insight into how Crewe's identity was forged in the age of steam.
From Fields to Railways will be available shortly in paperback this week, with Kindle editions now live on Amazon.
