Crewe and Nantwich MP, Connor Naismith continues to push the Home Office for the end to asylum hotels in Crewe, as The Royal Hotel continues to house refugees.

The historic grade II-listed Nantwich Road venue, dating back to the 1800s, has been housing asylum seekers since 2022.

This March, it was confirmed The Crewe Arms Hotel, Nantwich Road, opposite Crewe Railway Station, would reopen to the public on Monday 20 April, after its asylum arrangement came to an end.

There has been no such news for The Royal Hotel, last sold to Brilliant Hotels Group for an undisclosed fee in May 2022, with Mr Naismith promising to keep local residents informed of any updates.

Prior to the asylum seeker accommodation, the Royal Hotel site was open to the public for its 36 bedrooms, The Corner Bar pub and Langtry's function venue.

Located opposite Pedley Street Car Park and within a five-minute walk of Crewe Alexandra Football Club, the Victorian venue is missed by both residents and football supporters.

The Crewe MP told Nub News: "In my correspondence with the Home Office, I made it clear the development of asylum accommodation in Crewe without sufficient consultation has caused significant rifts in our community.

"To restore safety and balance, I urged the government to end the use of hotels to house asylum seekers in our area.  

"The Government is committed to closing all asylum hotels by 2029, but I will continue to push them to go further and faster.

"I have yet to receive news that The Royal Hotel has closed as an asylum hotel, but will keep residents informed of any further updates."
