More wet weather set to hit Crewe area as highways team steps up work
MORE monsoon like weather is heading for Crewe over the next few days after last week's flooding in the wake of Storm Christoph.
A Met Office yellow weather warning is in force for Crewe for today and Saturday, including a forecast for heavy rain this evening and in the early hours of Friday morning.
Areas of Crewe were hit last week after Valley Brook burst its banks after Storm Christoph brought a month's worth of rain in just two days.
Now Cheshire East's highways team is preparing for more problems as groundwater levels remain high meaning large areas of land remain saturated.
Highways staff have already responded to nearly 700 flood reports and supervised 30 road closures after flooding incidents. In addition, they have been out most nights gritting key routes, particularly higher roads in the east of the borough.
Cllr Laura Crane, Cheshire East Council Cabinet member for highways and waste, said: "It is important that despite the pandemic restrictions on movement residents don't put themselves or their homes at risk and that they follow any instructions from the emergency services.
"I would also appeal to landowners with watercourses on their property to deal with any potential obstacles that could cause localised flooding."
People are advised to call the council to report any flooding impact on homes or business premises on 0300 123 5020, or out of normal hours, 0300 123 5025.
In an emergency, or where there is a risk to life, dial 999.
