Crewe Town Mayor Cllr Benn Minshall opened the mental health unit.

MAYOR Ben Minshall says a new hospital unit which has opened in Crewe will help "destigmatise" mental health.

Cygnet Nield House is a 30-bed mental health unit located on Bradfield Road which caters for women with a range of psychological issues.

The hospital, which is run by Cygnet Health Care, is split into two distinct wards - Clarion and Compton, with each offering specialist services and therapies.

The facilities provided at the unit include an internet cafe, beauty salon and family room.

Cllr Minshall, who was given a tour of the hospital when it opened last month, said: "Mental health has been a taboo subject for some time and places like Cygnet Nield House help to destigmatise that.

"We all know somebody who has been affected by mental health and to know that access to these facilities is on the increase that gives me hope."

The Clarion Ward offers a complex personality disorder service for women with a dual diagnosis of personality disorder and co-morbid disordered eating.

While the Compton Ward, provides an acute service for women who need emergency admissions.

Hospital manager Masimba Kamba said: "The specialist support we offer means that women with a dual diagnosis of personality disorder and eating disorder are able to have both conditions treated simultaneously in an environment where they feel safe."

Referrals are now being accepted for Clarion Ward and you can see what the hospital offers here.
