Major Crewe town centre road to close for almost two weeks

A major Crewe town centre road is closing for almost two weeks, allowing the installation of a new zebra crossing.
Delamere Street, between Market Square and Delamere Street Car Park, closes in both directions on Monday 27 January.
It is anticipated the road running through the centre of town will reopen again on Saturday 8 February.
Cheshire East Highways are responsible for the works, removing the existing controlled crossing on Delamere Street.
Why is this development being done?

The crossing on Delamere Street was one of the few remaining Pelican controlled crossings within Cheshire East, and several components from the crossing were in extremely poor condition.
Due to the age and lack of spares for the controller, and the concern over failing cables, the upgrade of the crossing was a priority.
A feasibility study in February 2024 confirmed a crossing was required and a zebra crossing would considerably reduce the delay to pedestrians.
They will replace this with a new zebra crossing, as well as resurfacing the busy road.
Motorists are being diverted via Market Street, Chester Street and Lawrence Street.
If you have an enquiries relating to the works, please contact Cheshire East Highways on 0300 123 5020.
