SHOPPERS were out in force today on Crewe's newest retail site as Aldi opened its doors on University Way.

Staff were on hand to greet customers who formed a long socially-distanced queue which built up as the new store opened up at 8am. It replaces the retail giant's supermarket on the Grand Junction Retail Park which shuttered up last night.

Eleven new jobs have been created at the larger store which occupies 1,315 sqm of retail space, and the total staffing will be 37, including manager Leanne Jackson, who said: "It was lovely to meet our new customers at the University Way store this morning.

"The new store opened with social distancing guidelines in place to ensure the health and safety of our customers and colleagues. We would like to thank customers for their patience and support in adhering to these safety measures."."

Aldi fought for planning permission for the new store and were backed by a 4,000-name residents' petition after Cheshire East council planners initially recommended the proposals were rejected.

Sited near the Duke of Gloucester pub it boasts a large car park, which will be a welcome boost for shoppers who have had to compete for parking spaces at the former site on the retail park.

The new store offers large chillers and freezers and a 'Food to Go' section at the front of the store. There is a fixture along the back wall showcasing Aldi's award-winning beers, wines and spirits, as well as an exclusive section full of health and beauty products.

Aldi "Specialbuys" are available every Thursday and Sunday and mindful of the hot weather the store is selling a wide range of outdoor gear, including a dome tent for £34.99.

Store opening times are: Monday to Saturday: 8am – 10pm, Sunday: 10am – 4pm
