Residents will be able to see steam power in action on the mainline tomorrow as 'The Settle & Carlisle Fellsman' comes to town.

The express will depart from platform 12 at Crewe Station at 7.02am before making the journey across the Yorkshire Dales to Carlisle, which it will reach at midday.

The excursion will be hauled by Stanier Class 5 no.45231 'The Sherwood Forester' as it takes on passengers at Chester, Frodsham, Warrington Bank Quay, Wigan North Western, Euxton Balshaw Lane, Blackburn and Clitheroe.

For those who missed the early start, the express will leave Carlisle in the middle of the afternoon and return to Crewe at 9.50pm.

Organised by Saphos Trains, tickets for the excursion start at £165. Travellers can pay up to £350 for the full Pullman dining experience.

The website says: "The popular 'Fellsman' runs again in summer 2023 for its 15th season offering a return steam hauled journey on the spectacular 'Settle to Carlisle Railway' as we travel through the Yorkshire Dales and climb high towards the roof of England.

"With great limestone peaks and deep valleys, the legendary 'Settle to Carlisle' line is a masterpiece of Victorian engineering including the magnificent 24 arch viaduct at Ribblehead.

"Time will be available for sightseeing in the historic border city of Carlisle."

The excursion has already visited Crewe in May and June this year.

Full timings can be found on the Rail Advent website.
