A CREWE man who brandished a knife at his neighbour and kicked a police officer has escaped jail.

Scott Young received a nine-month custodial sentence suspended for 18 months when he appeared at Chester Crown Court.

Young, 32, of Hungerford Terrace, Crewe was also told by a judge to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and pay compensation to PC Mark Brameld who was on the receiving end of his kick.

The defendant flew into a temper when he was told to turn his loud music down on April 25 this year. He took out a kitchen knife when he was challenged by a neighbour at Whiston Close in Winsford, which was near to where the defendant used to live.

When police were called Young lashed out at PC Mark Brameld kicking him in the knee as he was put under arrest.

Young was sent to the crown court after South Cheshire magistrates declined to pass sentence on him on September 22.

At previous hearings at South Cheshire Magistrates' Court the defendant pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article in a public place as well as a charge of threatening behaviour.

He denied assault by beating of an emergency worker, but was convicted of the offence after a trial.

The lower court heard how residents asked Young to turn his music down, but sometime later the defendant was spotted by a neighbour's home.

He pulled out the kitchen knife and the terrified neighbour ran inside and bolted his door.

Young threw the knife away by the time police arrived, but he was then verbally abusive to the officers as he was arrested and lashed out at PC Brameld.

The defendant said he "could not explain his actions" and he was "ashamed".

At Chester Crown Court he was handed six months in custody for the knife offence and three months custody for the assault on the police officer, with both sentences to be served consecutively, and both suspended for 18 months.

As well as paying compensation to the officer he was told to pay costs and a victim surcharge.
