Crewe Alex's emergency goalkeeper saved two penalties in a tense shootout to send the club to Wembley, after throwing Doncaster's cheat sheet water bottle into the crowd.
Max Stryjek, 27, who only joined the club from Wycombe in April following injuries to Tom Booth and Harvey Davies, became the hero at Eco-Power Stadium.
The former Poland Under-21 international parried away Zain Westbrooke and Hakeeb Adelakun's spot kicks to secure a famous 4-3 shootout win, sending Crewe fans wild.
In extra time, Stryjek had turned Luke Molyneux's strike on to the post, which was Rover's best chance of the match in their 2-0 home defeat.
A Mickey Demetriou header and a James Maxwell own goal in the first 16 minutes levelled the aggregate score, with Crewe holding out until penalties to win.
Stryjek throws Doncaster water bottle into crowd
Before the shootout started, Stryjek was booked after running over to the edge of the pitch and throwing a water bottle into the crowd of Crewe fans.
This was Doncaster keeper, Thimothee Lo-Tutala's penalty tip sheet, telling him which way to dive for all of Crewe's penalties.
Lo-Tutala saved Mickey Demetriou's second penalty, but was unsuccessful in keeping out efforts from Courtney Baker-Richardson, Ryan Cooney, Lewis Leigh or Charlie Kirk.
To add the drama, Stryjek was unaware he had won the shootout for Crewe until he saw fans Alex streaming on to the pitch.
Crewe became only the fourth team in play-off history to overturn a 2-0 home defeat in the second leg.
Manager, Lee Bell, said: "Nobody gave us a chance aside from us in that dressing room.
"We've had some criticism over the past few weeks which I think wasn't just, but I've had it all my life. That's what gets me going. I love proving people wrong.
"We know what the players are capable of. Some of them are only 50 per cent fit but when you put those boys together and they are able to be a unit they are a match for anyone in this league.
"The congratulations should go to the players and the staff. I think it is a fantastic achievement. I think they fully deserve it, they work tirelessly.
"Thank you to everyone who came, it would have been easy to stay away. It was a great evening and we have to enjoy it. The scenes at the end were brilliant.
"We are going in the right direction as a club and to be going to Wembley is brilliant."
Crewe will now play the winner of MK Dons and Crawley at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 19 May (1pm).
