A former Crewe gym chain building with swimming pool is set to be demolished by Network Rail, with works commencing this December.

Total Fitness, Macon Way, permanently closed to the public in August 2021, with Network Rail purchasing the site for offices in 2022.

The sale price to Network Rail was undisclosed, although it had been marketed at close to £2.9m.

Following the cancellation of HS2, additional office space for Network Rail is no longer required.

In November of this year, Network Rail submitted plans to demolish the old gym building, facilitating the site to be used as 'temporary hardstanding.'

A Cheshire East planning officer deemed approval was not required for the development.

They said: "It is not considered that the proposed demolition and restoration works are outside of the requirements of the criteria of Schedule 2, Part 11, Class B of the GPDO.

"Therefore it is considered that the scheme represents permitted development subject to the works complying with the conditions specified in the Schedule where they are relevant.

"The demolition works are not anticipated to negatively impact the visual amenities of the area.
