HASLINGTON is to host a Great War Society exhibition as a reward for the way a community group marked the 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion.

Haslington Support Group helped organise a poppy trail back in May and drew up a map showing where poppy displays were placed around the village.

Members of the Cheshire Villages Great War Society were so impressed with the efforts that they agreed to host their World War One (WW1) exhibition on Saturday, November 13 at St. Matthew's Church Hall.

Chairman of Haslington Support Group Philip McKnight said: "It was a great honour to be approached by the Society. Its members had driven through the village on the weekend of the commemoration of 100 years since the founding of the RBL and they saw the entire main road covered in poppy displays.

"They thought it would be a super place to hold their next exhibition."

The support group's secretary, Connie Davis, who has a great interest in military history, has researched village residents who fought in WW1.

Of the 150 men who went off to war around 24 were killed and all our commemorated at the Crewe Road War memorial.

Connie said: "As a village we are very proud of our service during both world wars, and indeed we have roads named specifically in honour of our WW1 war casualties."

Crewe and Nantwich MP Kieran Mullen will open the exhibition with an address and other dignitaries will be present at the ceremony, including the High Sheriff of Cheshire, local mayors and leaders of nearby town councils.

Sandbach High School for Girls has contributed research material to the exhibition, which runs from 10am to 5pm at St Matthews Hall in Park Lane (CW1 5TQ).

It is free admission, refreshments will be available and there will be a military ambulance to have a look around.
